No Clock, No Paper, No Problem!

The Fuel Shed

The quaint patisserie in the heart of downtown Bowmanville has a “hipster-esque,” yet hometown coffee shop atmosphere. With no clocks, televisions, newspapers or commercial-interrupted music, Coffee & Cakes truly provides its patrons a way to interact with each other and escape everyday stresses. But don’t worry, they have free Wi-Fi.

Barista, Mark Robinson and wife/Cake Designer, Lisa, opened their doors as Coffee & Cakes in August 2012, providing Clarington with a variety of international store roasted beans and specialty baked goods. With Summerfest happening this weekend, Coffee & Cakes has launched their own coffee label, Make Every bean Count. Customers are now able to purchase a selection of the internationally store roasted beans to take back into their own homes.

Not only do they offer what I would like to state as the best coffee in town, the Robinson’s also have a substitute option for those who don’t have such a sweet tooth.

“I was really out of shape before we opened the place, and I needed a serious lifestyle change,” says Robinson. “I started running and getting involved in triathlons. We talked about giving Clarington a healthier alternative, and that’s when we opened The Fuel Shed.”

Since 2013, The Fuel shed has been providing patrons with a healthier menu. Some options include their fresh, made-to-order protein shakes, specialty sandwiches, raw soups, and clean smoothies. Not only is clean eating a top priority of the store, but being active and getting involved in local events such as Tough Mudder, local marathons, or even small running groups is a focus point too. The Shed Team is an idea that Robinson has been toying with, but hopes to allow it grow into something of it’s own.

“Much like the Running Room, the Shed Team can be a group of people who want to enter a marathon-type event, or just go running as a group,” says Robinson. “We can sponsor your team for the event, or we can even have a networking session with health and fitness as our common goal.”

The Robinson’s truly believe in a sustainable community, agreeing that customer interaction is the base of their own success. So don’t forget to drop in, say hello to Mark and Lisa, and have yourself the best cup of coffee in Clarington!
